Project Fish4Her
Rocío López de la Lama is a social science researcher whose work focuses on human rights, small-scale fisheries, gender dynamics, human–nature relationships, and the social dimensions of conservation. She graduated in Biology from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in 2012, where she began conducting research on sustainable seafood and small-scale fisheries. She holds a Master's degree in Conservation Leadership from the University of Cambridge (2015) and a PhD in Resource Management and Environmental Studies from the Institute for Resources, Environment, and Sustainability (IRES) at the University of British Columbia (2023). Her doctoral research examined the diverse relationships people maintain with nature in the context of voluntary land conservation in Peru, contributing to broader efforts to strengthen human-nature connections.
Following her PhD, Rocío completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs (SPPGA) at UBC. Her work focused on ocean defenders and the social, economic, and political challenges they face in pursuing blue justice for the coastal communities they live in. Through this research, she deepened her interest in the gender dynamics of small-scale fisheries, which informed the development of her current Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship. Her project investigates the human-rights challenges faced by women fish processors in West Africa, with an emphasis on gender justice and empowerment within small-scale fishing communities.
Rocío is also an Associate Researcher with the Socio-Ecological Systems Group at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia.
